M by Montcalm, London - EC1V 1JH
“When I am rich’, said the bells of Shoreditch” goes the nursery rhyme, well I think it’s safe to say that time has come. The M by Montcalm is the latest addition to the areas ever changing skyline. It marks another milestone in the gentrification of Shoreditch, having gone from a working class bolthole through to a hipster paradise, and onto the UK’s startup hub. Now the area is an extension of The City, filled with gleaming apartments, new offices and posh coffee shops looking to relieve bankers of an easy fiver.
The hotel is the sixth London outpost of Montcalm hotels and has been purpose built in a rather unique looking building. From a distance it look as though it was designed after a heavy drinking session, and walking up to it honestly made me feel like I’d had a few too. Inside however is much more relaxing. We visited a few weeks after it first opened and already the bars and public spaces were bustling with local workers hosting meetings and enjoying coffees, which were good even by local standards.
The meetings and events spaces are all found on the second floor. Given the buildings peculiar shape they have linked all the events spaces together in a U shape. When opened up the whole floor can accommodate dinners of up to 200 and conferences for 150. When sectioned off there are individual 6 conference suites, with the smallest seating 12 in a boardroom style. Given the nature of the area food and technology play a large part in the delegate experience.
The hotel is the perfect fit for Shoreditch as it currently stands, it’s corporate enough for the banks and cool enough for the startups.
