To the unfamiliar Red Carnation Hotels are renowned as one of the world’s finest hotel operators. As I write this their hotels occupy the top three places on Trip Advisor for hotels in London, and they have five properties within the top 15. At sixth place is The Montague , a collection of townhouses in Bloomsbury just a stones throw from the British Museum. Transformed into an 88 bedroom hotel with numerous food and drink outlets, a wonderful garden and decent meetings & events spaces, the hotel looks out across the tranquil private gardens owned by the Duke of Bedford.
Guests of the hotel have access to the luxurious Cigar Terrace, where the hotel owners are said to regularly enjoy relaxing. There’s also the Blue Door Bistro restaurant available throughout the day and rated in the top 2% of restaurants in London. For those looking for a venue for outdoor events the hotel offer a unique solution. Given the setup across 5 townhouses the hotel in effect had 5 small gardens. These have been linked together via the Terrace Bar and Cigar Terrace to create a mixed indoor/outdoor space that can accommodate parties of 150. They have a permanent BBQ set up so impressive that I felt an overwhelming sense of envy and admiration for the lucky chefs. BBQ menus start from around £60 including wine and reception drinks. In the winter the space is converted into a themed ski lodge, available to hire for private events as well as general admission for anyone wanting a winter Pimms or mulled wine.
For those seeking spaces for a meeting, conference or private dining event the hotel offers 5 event spaces for hire. The largest room, The Great Russell Suite, can accommodate conferences of 120 or banquets for 80. The Woburn Suite is a smaller room but offers natural daylight and an in-room breakout area, making it ideal for board meetings or private dining events. The Red Carnation Chain has two real selling points. Firstly it’s run by a family who take a real interest in the properties so everything is immaculate and staff training is invested in heavily. Secondly they are flexible, a rarity these days in London. At The Montague they are offering a 5* service, impeccable spaces and comprehensive event packages, at rates that are 50% less than many un-worthy competitors.
