Q&A with Kathryn Williams - Commercial Manager at London's Puttshack

Tell us about your role at the venue and how long you’ve been there

I joined the wonderful Puttshack family at the end of January 2019 as Commercial Manager, meaning I am responsible for creating and implementing the sales strategy for Puttshack. The team I lead are responsible for all pre-booked sales and my role is to grow and lead the team to exceed company targets and deliver exceptional events with high levels of customer service, allowing us to grow the business nationwide and globally.

What’s the best thing about working at Puttshack?

Hands down the team! The company is filled with like-minded, ambitious, competitive and fun loving people. The company really do put people first and it shows with the culture and work environment... And of course, having the added bonus of being able to play mini golf all the time, although my skill level doesn’t seem to be improving!

How did you get into the industry?

I have worked in hospitality my whole life. When I was seven, I made peanut butter cookies at primary school and since that day, all I ever wanted to do was to work in hospitality – so I always say that it’s Peanut Butter Cookies that decided my career for me! I left school and trained to be a chef for three years and, while in my final year, I decided that I wanted to go to university, so I studied a BA in Hospitality Business Management in Birmingham. From there I had two amazing opportunities where I worked in front of house positions in Disneyworld Florida, at the Epcot Centre, and then in a 5* hotel in Aspen Colorado.

Since 2008, I have worked for 3 very successful start-up companies and this is where I found my niche. I love the excitement and challenges that start-up companies bring me – it’s exciting, exhilarating and not for the feint hearted! Taking something from the unknown to the known, growing teams, sales and giving people an exceptional experience in a unique setting - whether it’s a social or corporate event feels great!

Tell us something we wouldn’t know about Puttshack

The tech involved in creating Puttshack is so detailed and advance that we have a guy who used to work for Formula 1 creating it!

What’s the coolest/best/most interesting event you’ve worked on, and how did the venue cope with it?

We have recently pushed the boundaries of the venue by hosting a 4 day, exclusive hire event for a top high street food retailer. On face value, it looked like we wouldn’t be able to accommodate their set up, but with the full teams involvement we came up with a solution that the client loved. We had to come up with a plan that allowed them to have exclusive use to the venue for their event while allowing us to open to the public each night. They had a full stage set up that then had to be taken down in a very short amount of time to be stored, ready for us to open the venue to the public within 45 minutes… And of course, with all new builds, we didn’t have any storage space, so that posed a problem – but we came up with a solution that worked brilliantly! The event was a huge success and the client left really happy.

What events work best at Puttshack?

Pretty much any type of booking and for any type of person!

Networking & team building events work really well – having something to do while talking to people that you don’t necessarily know well breaks down social barriers – and brings out the competitive spirits! Speaking of spirits we have over 100 rums which are ideal for post work drinks too.

In addition to these, we can accommodate theatre style meetings for up to 40, cabaret style conferences up to 100, client entertaining, summer & Christmas parties, birthday parties, dates, or just a bunch of friends out to have a good time!

Why do clients choose to host events at your venue?

The game is super fun and unique which makes a memorable event, whatever the reason for hosting the party. It’s also such a good way to get out of the office and have some good old new fashioned fun. So many people come as social goers so why should the corporates miss out on the fun? It’s 100% more fun and quirky than your standard conference venue.

Making a booking is really easy – we really listen to our clients and the purpose for them booking with us. We are conscious of how busy people are and how they are looking for us to recommend the best experience and we do just that! We will arrange the game, the food, the drinks and the atmosphere!

We also have a range of packages that will suit anyone’s budgets, starting from £15 per person. You can reserve a table at the bar, you can reserve a whole area, you can hire the full venue or just pop in for food and drinks.

What are your venues top 3 USPs that separate Puttshack from other venues?

- The world’s first super tech mini golf, with patented technology that calculates your score for you as you play one of our four courses

- Food – all our food is made onsite and we cater really well for dietary requirements – we have a vegan or gluten free guest in your party – no problem!

- We have a selection of the rarest rums found in the UK – 127 in fact! But if rums not your thing, we’ve got everything else too…

What changes or exciting plans are coming up in 2019 for the venue?

This year is going to be really exciting for Puttshack! In July 2019; we are opening our new venue in Lakeside Essex which can hold up to 600 people and then our venue in 1 Poultry Building in the City at the end of 2019 which will hold up to 700 people. And we’re not stopping there – watch out for more exciting news for 2020.
